Never Went Back To The Moon

by Joe Davis and Jocelyn Scott

What are the pertinent facts of the story
What would you like to know
It’s a little surreal sitting here over coffee
With the love of a lifetime ago
It was amazing
A fireworks display
Then it was over
There’s nothing more to say
Somehow our love story ran out of pages
Somehow we peaked too soon
We could always go back to the moonlight
But we never went back to the moon

Circling back on revisionist history
Second-guessing the years
We set the bar so high so fast that
We set ourselves up for the tears
And I still wonder
If apologies are due
But who should be sorry
I cannot speak for you
It’s like taking words out of a love song
‘Til all you have left is the tune
We could always go back to the moonlight
But we never went back to the moon

That’s the way I remember
Our simple twist of fate
Twenty-two years and a cold cup of coffee
I hope it was worth the wait
If it’s any consolation
I haven’t loved since then
I hope that you can find someone
To take you there again
When you write a love letter at daybreak
And you’ve broken her heart before noon
We could always go back to the moonlight
But we never went back to the moon
